Bailer | Own Blood Magazine

OBM: Hi, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for us. How are you doing; what’re you up to at the moment?
We're doing really good right now as we're at a high point for the band having just released our debut EP "Shaped By The Landscape" on April 29th. We had a couple of launch shows in Dublin and Cork too and those were insane so we feel we're at the crest of this momentum now and we plan to keep that up.

.
OBM: Let's start with the formalities. How did the band form and does the band sound like what you always envisaged it to be?
We formed through an equal passion for music and we feel that shows in everything we do. We had all been in separate bands before but this is the first one where we all feel like we're on the same page and aiming for the same goals. The band is still in it's infancy really, but from the start the core sound of what we wanted was shining through immediately. We're continuing to develop that sound and we feel there's a whole lot more to come from us.

.
OBM: Who were your musical influences growing up?
Metal and hardcore music has always been a big part of all of our lives. There's way too many incredible bands to mention that have influenced each of us, but the energy, passion and vibe in that music has always appealed to us and we feel a big connection to it.

.
OBM: You released your debut EP, Shaped By The Landscape, a few days ago. How has the reactions been thus far?
The reactions have been great so far, we're really proud of this release and it's a fantastic feeling to finally have it out there for everyone to hear it. We've had some really positive reviews and the feedback from people at our shows has been amazing. We can't wait to get out on the road and bring our music to a lot more people!

.
OBM: Where did the lyrical inspiration for the songs on the EP come from?
When reading lyrics we usually like them to be a challenge. Something you can dissect and somehow relate to yourself or to a situation you might be facing. “Lyrics have solved many problems for me and I hope to translate the same feelings through my own.“ – Alex
.

OBM: "Shaped By The Landscape" looks like the perfectly designed record too, who's idea was the layout and design concept?
The concept was a collective effort by the band and it was wonderfully put together by an artist and good friend of ours named Colin Bolger at Dabulga Design. It turned out even better than any of us could have imagined and we're delighted with the end result. A big shout to Colin for that! https://www.facebook.com/DabulgaDesign/
.

OBM: In your opinion how is the state of the irish hardcore/metal scene at the moment?
Around 10 years ago, Ireland had a pretty busy hardcore/metal scene and there were a lot of gigs happening around the country all the time. That died down a bit when the recession hit and a lot of good venues closed down. But thankfully it's starting to pick up again and it won't take you long to find some really good bands here. The likes of Murdock, Red Enemy, Ilenkus and Zhora are flying the flag for heavy music here and hopefully the scene will continue to get back on it's feet.
.

OBM: What’s coming up next for Bailer? What does the future hold?
Up next for us we have a show with Norma Jean when they play in Dublin on June 11th and from there we're planning on hitting the UK for a couple of tours, one in the summer and hopefully another in the fall. Who knows, maybe some shows around Europe is on the horizon too! In between all the shows, we're already working on new material for our next record too.

OBM: Who else should people check out from Cork?
People should definitely check out Horse. Those dudes are good friends of ours and they get that dirty hardcore vibe going. Check them out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJOlUCfLeC8
.

OBM: Why should people come and check out a Bailer show?
We take pride in delivering an intense and energetic live show. The music we play calls for it and it happens naturally for us. We love that connection with the crowd when everyone is in sync and feeling the same vibes. This is the most fun we have doing anything, and we think that translates to the audience pretty quick when we hit the stage. Everyone leaves with a smile.
.

OBM: Why do you think a lot of bands in the hardcore scene have nothing more to say then "we have merch up the back" when on stage?
That's a good question. It's possible a lot of bands have run out of things to say or simply don't know how to convey the message they want to get across. For us it's about embracing who you are, having something to say, and the confidence to back it. If you're passionate about your message and music it should be clear.
.

OBM: Who are you currently listening to? Is there anyone out there that is currently impressing your socks off?
We're all really enjoying the new Deftones album. It's had a mixed reception it seems, but it's damn good! The debut album from Zoax just came out and it is absolutely incredible, they are such prolific song writers with serious drive. New Dublin hardcore band Orangutan just dropped their debut EP “Learn to be Human” which is also on repeat all day! And on a slight tangent, we're eagerly awaiting the new Every Time I Die album too. We reckon that's going to be one of the albums of the year, no doubt.

.

OBM: Can we expect to see you in Germany anytime soon?
We hope so! We'd love to play in Germany. Hopefully we can get over there either late this year or early next year. It's a country that all of us would love to visit so we'd like to maybe do a week of shows there. We hear nothing but amazing things about the metal and hardcore scene and we’ve had a lot of interest from people there already. It’s high on our bucket list!

.
OBM: Thanks for your time, anything else you’d like to say?
Thanks for checking us out and keep an eye out for us in Germany soon!
